More often than not you get what you pay for.
I like buying cheap and optimizeing it to my tast, its a lot more fun that way. Well thats what I think, (to each he,s own)

I understand your point and I agree with you, however there's no way to optimize a filter that is simply too small.

I think those big air filters are over kill. What is the CFM of are motors? What is the CFM of those big K&N?

First off inverted cone filters rob power. And NO big filters are not overkill. Optimum size for a NA 2.5L is 600-650cfm Effective area. Get the biggest filter you can squeeze into the engine bay which is the K&N listed below. A less restrictive intake means less loss of natural cfm draw from the engine and therefore efficiency gain. The larger the filter the less restriction.
Could have made this for cheap.
K&N ru-3530 (~645cfm BTW!) ajusa.com $33.11, KKM maf adapter from e-bay $10+ shipping, rubbermaid breadbox heatshield $5. Guess you won't have the shiney intake pipe though.
Newbie's might want to search before spending money on Kmart parts.

doesn't Kmart sell the trash can that you used as a cheapo heat shield?

That is another CEGers set FYI. And yes I'm sure it can be had at Kmart. WTF is your point?
