So my wife and I are driving back home, just got off a cruise from the Bahamas, best time of our lives. My trusty Tour was waiting for us in the long term parking for 4 days. Got in, started driving, got about 40 miles covered... BAM!!! smoke everywhere. Stuck on Florida's 417 turnpike 110 miles from home, I called a truck and got the car to a shop, and there is a hole in my block, the size of 2 fists, and I can see my crank. The car ran perfect, had the right fluids, never made a noise or a rattle, good temp. What in the world could have happened? Anyone?

Thanks

Condolences, dude. What a pisser.

Anyway, the first possible cause that comes to mind is maybe a defective piston/ring/con rod/pin. These parts can have tiny defects and can fly apart without any notice, even though you have done all the proper maintenance.

Another possibility: broken timing belt allowed valves and pistons to meet violently, causing destruction of a piston. This theory is less likely, though, because the Zetec may be a non-interference engine.

I thought the Zetec WAS a non-interference engine. Is that wrong? I'd be very pissed if this was due to a timing belt.

even if the valves had interference with the piston it wouldn't blow the side of the block out, it would bend the valve

sounds like something let go in the bottom end ...

Hole in block sounds like classic thrown connecting rod. Sometimes things do just break even when they shouldn't. How many miles on motor?

Sorry to hear about it.

Sorry took so long to reply. Engine had about 95,000 on it, and gave no sign of problems. I did find another engine already... 55,000 + 1 year parts and labor = $475.00
