I recently posted a comment about how my automatic transmission in my 2000 ford contour with the v-6 started acting funny now the O/D light started flashing and the transmission seems like it slips and then engages slips then engages and shifts erratically like it cant make up its mind what gear it wants to go into. I thought maybe it was just slipping so I put some Lucas transmission fix in it in case it had a seal leak and it didn't do anything. Is my transmission going bad or could it be something simple like the computer needs to be reprogrammed or something like that?

When your Od light starts flashing it pretty much means your trans is gone.

I hate to say it but what has happened is the transmission has overheated and basically cooked itself from the inside.
I have seen this problem more than I want to, Mazda uses the same cd-4 trans in the 626 and we replaced them as if we were doing oil changes. Also just put a reman trans from ford in my contour cost me about $2700.00. Mine done exactly the same thing o/d light flashed and trans would slip.

Umm... not really. A good fluid change will most likely fix it. Do the fill and drain technique, search in the transaxle forum. This was just covered not long ago, and has been in the past. See quote from unisys12 below about O/D light flashing.

The reason it is shifting harshly, after the light starts flashing, is because the PCM has commanded the tranny be run in a Fail Safe Mode. In this mode, the trannys line pressure is up'ed to higer than normal pressure under all conditions. This higher than normal line pressure is what is causing the harsh shifts.

I have to agree with most, tranny is on it's way out. Same thing happened to my Mystique. Revs high right before changing gears, O/D light flashes, tranny has no idea which way to go... start pricing used trannies.

Thanks for trying to shead some light on this... I will go a step further and repost a section from the CD4E FAQ's I have in the tranny forum...

Originally posted by CD4E FAQ; Section OBD-II Info:

From the `98 Ford Service CD -
"The MIL is illuminated for all emissions related electrical component malfunctions. For malfunctions attributable to a mechanical component (such as a clutch, gear, band, valve, etc.), some transmissions are capable of not commanding the mechanically failed component and providing the remaining maximum functionality (functionality is reassessed on each power up)- in such case a non-MIL Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored and, if so equipped, a Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) will flash."

What this basically means, is that the CEL will illuminate, and stay that way, during an emmissions related electrical component faliure or malfunction. That is until the PCM memory is either cleared manually or the fault is not detected after two consecutive drive cycles.

If there is a mechanical failure, in the tranny, it will cause the TCIL (O/D light) to flash, which means that the PCM has stored a code indicating which fault it was. But!! This code will be cleared once the engine is turned off.

So. If your O/D light flashed, there was a code there to be read. If you turned your engine off before you could actually read that code, that code would disappear. If when you started your car again and the CEL was not on or the O/D light did not flash, there is nothing there to read. You will have to wait until the fault happens again.

Why do you keep saying this when I have said many times you arent correct?
I used to have PO731, the O/D light would flash, and I would shut off the car. We scanned it at school later that same day and retrieved the code, the CEL wasnt on at all.

The code is stored is the computer.

Do you think Ford would make it so the only way to get the code is go directly to the shop as soon as the light begins to flash?

You always give out good information and all but this time you are giving out wrong information.
