Sprint PCS has had PTT for almost a year now, why would they buy nextel for that when they already have it?

Sprint PCS is a great company if you pay attention to their coverage map. don't buy it if you're not in their area. I sell sprint and cingular in a rural area that barely has sprint service. I explain to my customers the difference between the two and i still sell more sprint. sprint is the leader in technology. they have awesome phones, just don't buy a samsung, if you do you're asking for dropped calls. Sanyo is the way to go, they make phones exclusively for Sprint, and are the only company to win JD Power awards for cell phones, and have been winning them consistently for the best reception.

I'm just wondering what's gonna happen with Boost mobile, aren't they a subsidiary of nextel?

Does anyone know if people will be able to use the PTT feature with Sprints Ready-Link compatable phones, or will this mean another phone in my future? I kinda like my SCP-5500 camera phone, but if something cooler comes out I guess I'll just have to splurge again.

matt.....i have to both agree and disagree with you. i agree that if you are in the sprint network then their serivce quality is excellent, especially when compared to cingular. i have to disagree about the samsung phones though. the only problem that i have had with either of my last two phones, both of which were samsung, was when i threw the phone out of aggrevation.....very hard. yes i know, very very stupid move but in my defense it was female instigated. other than that they both worked admirably for me. then again...just my opinion.

now that i think about it my last phone is still being used by my mom after 2.25 years.

I did not know that... The article I read on the purchase didn't say Sprint had PTT already. They did mention that Sprint would combine the PTT features of Nextel with their PCS Vision or whatever they call their mobile entertainment by the end of 2006. In that case I guess they just wanted Nextels network then. Maybe they wanted the business customers

From what the article I read said, all Nextel customers will need a new phone at some point which makes it seem like current Sprint customers can keep their phone.

I read before that Nextel uses Motorola's IDEN (806MHz-821MHz Tx / 851MHz-866MHz Rx ESMR band) communication method, which is the same as higher end 2-ways (like police/fire/military), but uses GSM (850 Mhz cellular band) to transmit voice calls. Sprint uses CDMA 1900MHz (PCS band).

If that article was correct about Sprint wanting all Nextel customers to merge to their network... that's gonna mean a complete overhaul of one of the networks, probly Nextel's since it's smaller.

Read this about Nextel interfering with public safety radios which would have to have been taken care of soon anyway.

EDIT: just to note, these are frequencies used by leading cellular companies:
T-Mobile: 1900MHz PCS GSM
Cingular: 850MHz Cellular / 1900MHz PCS GSM
Sprint: 1900MHz PCS CDMA
Verizon: 850MHz Cellular CDMA
US Cellular: 850MHz Cellular TDMA

"PCS" is just a name for the 1800/1900MHz band.

Sanyo phones are the [censored]. Everyone I know who has had sprint gets a MUCH better signal with one, for instance my friend had a Samsung (N400 I think) and lost it, got a Sanyo (8900?) and now he can actually use his phone all through his house, before he had to go outside with it. Better than the LG he had before that though...

Doubt it. Just make one big sucky company with a buncha people beeping each other spending 10 minutes to make a 3 minute phone call and letting everyone else in the world hear the whole thing.
