http://www.transgaming.com/ ... now known as Cedega ( formally known as WineX ) is a fairly nice tool for gaming on linux. Pretty much anything that is natively OpenGL will run without a hitch... The latest 4.2 release added a good bit of support for directx9 games.
The ONLY game I'm having trouble with under cedega is Dark Age of Camelot - Catacombs. I play HL2 (with Source add-ons) under Linux with no problems.

This web site has a huge list of Linux software. I read that some of the software is only used for playing games.

I just tried Xandros, the free version. It kicks butt! So clean, easy to use. Very similar to windows, so the learning curve is very low. I read on ExtremeTech that v3 is even better.
Oh, and it is based on Debian.

You don't have to pay. You can get the CVS version ( which is the latest and greatest ) for free. Granted you might have to deal with some bugs with HotOffThePress games, but older stuff already support will be fine.
You should consider what your are paying for... Technically, you can only pay once just to get the latest version. And go from there. But, the are the only ones working on DirectX gaming for Linux. I mean, jeez... $15. Considering all that you have to pay for using Linux, that's a SMALL price to pay for development of a handy product.
As for video codecs and such, you should pull the latest mplayer rpm. That should have MOST of the codecs you'd need. For DVDs, you can use mplayer, but I stick with Xine.
