So, I'm having problems correctly setting up my network at home which consists of two computer.
One computer has a Linksys WRT54G wired router and the other computer is running a Linksys WMP54G wireless router. I'm having trouble correctly accessing these computers and setting them up to be seen properly on the net work.
In WinXP when I go to Network Places, I can see both computers on the comp with the wired router but cannot access the other computer. It tells me 'networkname is not accessible, you may not have permission'.
In Network Places on the comp with the wireless router, sometimes I cannot see my computer or the other...or sometimes I can see just mine or sometimes I can see both...but when I see both I get the same message as I do on the other computer.
What exactly am I doing wrong?
-the wireless router is encrypted with WEP -Zone Alarm on the comp with the wired router -no firewall on the comp with the wireless router -have selected files that I want to be shared in the network on both computers -both running WinXP

Why are you using two routers on the same network? That is a definite problem right there.

are they both set to the default winxp network (MSHOME)? or if not, are they both set to the same network name?
Help!!! Get Me out of this PRISON!!!

1st - Get rid of the wired router and just use the wireless...it should have a few wired ports on the back of it.
2nd - get rid of zonealarm and any other firewall software you have. The router is a good enough firewall, and those programs often block computers on the local network from having access to your computer, not just internet h4x0rs.
3rd - make sure you have user accounts on all the computers you want to have access to. For example, if you're logged on as "Admin" on computer A and you want to access files on computer B, computer B must have a user account called "Admin" and the password must be the same too.
And, windows XP/2000 can be finicky if you're sharing the root of the C: drive.
Oh yeah, and obviously they all should be on the same workgroup.

I have three routers on my home network, but only one is the DHCP server (distributes IP addresses). The other two are setup to be a switch and a wireless access point. If I remember I had to disable the DHCP server on the two routers that were not going to be the main router. Then the main router would distribute IP addresses to all of the computers on the system, and I could share files between all of the computers.

yeah, but there really is no reason for him to have the 2 routers. He really has no use for 2. Why not get rid of all the stuff that he has no use for and might be causing his problem?

I agree, routers internally are only slowing your traffic down, and making this complex. The only router you need should be routing traffic from the LAN to the WAN. Quote:

Um, you do know about the hidden shares that ALL 2k, XP, 2k3 machines have, right?

I have to have two routers...the wireless can't work without the WRT54G I may be using the wrong terminology but if the wired one is not there the wireless pci card will not have anything to receive signal from. So I should ditch Zone Alarm? I know the router has a built in firewall...combined with the WEP encryption thats good enough? On the computer with the wireless pci card I am not logged in by admin...although the other computer may. What if I just make a new account on each computer with no password, is this okay? this is the wired router and this is the wireless pci card.

Ah! I get it! You have ONE router, and ONE wireless NIC!
Yeah, ditch ZoneAlarm, and make sure that the XP firewall is turned off. Then you should have no problems...
