I just bought a 98 contour se, 2.0 atx.
got the oil changed today, and I was told that they can only get 3.0 quarts in, otherwise the dipstick says there is to much. He asked me if my oil pan had a dent in it, while the other guy underneath said it didn't. Has anyone else had this problem, or know what else to look for before I take it to my reg. mech.

unless the oil pan is filled with sludge then it should take 5 qts of oil with out an issue

when I bought the car, of course I checked the oil, and it looked good. The dealer did an oil changed before I took it home, and recently I checked it again, and it was overfull. they got the right amount out, but the right amount in was to much. How hard is it to drop the oil pan, and check that out?

Dropping the pan is not the hard part as there are only, IIRC, twelve bolts holding it on. Getting it out of the car is the difficult task. The exhaust system, at least from the flex pipe forward, has to be removed. The engine must be lifted to be able to wiggle the pan from between the subframe and the oil pickup.

I would suspect more that the car has the wrong dipstick because two quarts of sludge would be hard to accumulate, even with poor maintence.

as silly as this sounds, could someone do me a favor and measure their oil dipstick, so I could compare? 98 2.0 atx.

The pan would have to have a huge dent to displace 2 quarts.

I think an aluminum pan would crack before it would dent.

Could it have a load of sludge in the crankcase that won't drain out? That would be really bad news.

They probably forgot to drain oil out.
