You're perceptive yes, it's a state case. Thanks for the information, hopefully I won't need to go at all but I am of course planning as though I must. I am glad the state cases rarely go more than a day at least. It is unfortunate that they give the notification only half a day in advance (I have to call after 3PM on Tuesday to find out), makes for an unpredictable schedule, but certainly better than guaranteeing I have to be there.

Massachusetts does not allow you to skip jury duty based on student status; I could postpone it but (1) procrastinated too much, and more importantly (2) the new, randomly picked, completely unreschedulable date might have even worse timing.

Todras, I just don't have your luck. No way I could cancel and not expect another notice.

Actually I got 2 or 3. I just wrote back stating I was still in school. I'd be happy to serve now. Haven't heard anything in 7+ yrs.

I was called to JD a month or so ago for PETIT jury. The length of time you serve is dependent upon the jury type specified, at least in my state. The longest jury types are CAPITAL juries (murder, manslaughter, etc.) and GRAND juries (30-90 days usually). Most PETIT jury cases if not plead out or settled last 1-3 days. I was called up into a court room and actually called into the jury box but was promptly dismissed since the case was against a black police officer charged with offensive touching and assault, and I think the defense was looking to minimize white middle class guys as part of the jury. They went through almost the entire 40 person contingent sent up into the court room before the final 12 jurors were selected for the case. I then went back to the jury selection room and got my two year "get out of jail free" card for be willing to serve. I would actually liked to have served on the jury but it just wasn't my time I guess.

My wife has been summoned twice this fall but since we homeschool she got out of it, she's the only teacher.

Change your voter registration and see what happens. I've been called twice within the last 4 years, both times about 2 months after changing info for voter registration. That makes me wonder.
My last time I sat on the jury for this wonderful guy: WXYZ News Story
After sitting in court all day he pleaded no contest.

Interesting, although voter registration might have nothing to do with it. (I am not registered to vote.)
