There is a large step from the Canon PowerShot G6 to the Nikon D70. Many models exist in the space between the two, including the Canon PowerShot Pro1 and the Nikon Coolpix 8800...both higher-end, non-SLR models with wide-range high quality zoom lenses for serious amateurs.

The Olympus C-8080 rules supreme on the "SLR-like" list.

Olympus C-8080

PS: The D70 is plastic also. It has a better kit lens and other minor improvements, but is much more expensive than the Rebel. My Rebel kit was $500 after rebates.

If one cannot take a good picture with non-defective A75, one won't be able to with a more expensive one with more manual controls.

My Casio QVR40 blurs as well, but only with a shaky hand. You need to be extremely still and choose your settings correctly.

$200 for a 4 megapixel camera. $20 for a 57" tripod.
Couldn't go wrong.

There is no such thing. I had to buy 2 lenses to get the $300 rebate on the Rebel kit. The Rebel kit alone is $700 after $100 rebate.

The sample picture is definitely due to camera shake. Make sure your setting dial is on the green square (auto). An SLR is more difficult to use, so maybe you should stick to a point and shoot.
