after replacing my intake gaskets and cleaning my intake my tour wont start. it cranks but wont turn over. i started looking at the wiring going into that silver box that sits atop the valve covers and it had literally no insulation left. i cut away the wiring cover and it exposed corroded and frayed wiring. i took the upper intake off and opened up the cover for the inkjector wiring and found the same thing. is it possible to replace that section of wiring? will the same thing be happening on all conotours or is it specific to earlier models? thanks in advace for the help. later

this sounds like the problem w/ earlier model years, actually covered by wiring harness recall. the insulation becomes brittle and eventually exposes the wiring. from your signature, it looks like you have '98 which is presumably not affected by the problem and not subjected to the recall. the injector harness is fairly expensive... something to the tune of $600 iirc.

You can probably buy just the harnesses that you need without buying everything under the hood. You need to talk with a dealer and see what is still available for your car. Bill Jenkins and his replacement (Bill was promoted) at Signature Lincoln / Mercury has always given CEG members a great discount and stellar service if you don't have another dealer in mind.

dsickles123456789,

Send me your VIN # and I will run an OASIS to see if your vehicle is covered under the recall.

And I will get you prices on those 2 harnesses.

Bill Jenkins I am moving to Team Ford as of 08/01/05 (www.teamfordlv.com). I will post new info when it's ready.

i just got all 4 harnesses replaced under recall 2 weeks ago. Had to pay about $390 in extra labor and misc parts though.

Just an FYI....a Contour (IIRC 96 w60k) was totalled due to the harnesses. It was a nice car. The harnesses (all three of them) can run up to about 3k total IIRC. One of them is ~1300 by itself.....

Does the recall only cover 95-97s?

yes. The car must be under 100K to qualify as well.

And it's a big fat stinkin' job that books only eight hours, so most mechanics are going to balk at it. The best way to accomplish it, at least if you're going for the full monty, is to just pull the engine, or so I'm told, because otherwise it's a royal pain to get in and around it.
