hi guys, the first time i turn on my car everyday it idles for about 10 seconds and then it just dies out...ive beeen wondering what could be the cause of this, i have replaced spark plugs, and cleaned the MAF sensor and it acts the same. It only happens the first time it starts in the day..whether it is in the morning or after noon. AFter wards it turns on fine and doesnt do it.
Also my idle is about 1200 at park, then when the car gets warm it drops to about 900-800. Then when i turn my AC on it goes down to about 500-300 and the car begins to shake. Drives fine, but at a traffic light it just shakes and vibrates..kind of annoying. any one else have this problem?
just wondering what u guys think of this, i know some one out there can help, thanks in advance..any input would help

Sounds like you own an exact copy of my car.
With the dying same thing here, there are two main things it can be, dirty IAC valve, or there is a TSB for dying after 8 hour soak a revised MAF is installed to fix it.
What I do so I dont have to start it twice and put more wear on the starter is, hold the gas pedal at like 1500 for like 5 seconds, the it drops down to 1000, then I hit it slighty to like 1500 and it wont die. Problem is the IAC valve is gonna cost you $189 from Ford, the MAF is $140 I think, so if your just going to guess hopefully you make a lucky one.
Secondly with my A/C or defrost on it to shakes terribly, also my idle goes up and down 500-700, so annoying. Let me know if you find a fix for it.

Can you just take the IAC valve out and clean it? I have done that on other cars.
ATX MTX swap, rear drum disc swap, drilled rotors, ported intake, optim throttle body, CAI, 7.5L MAF, adj. fuel regulator, longtube headers, underdrive pulley, no EGR, low inpedence bigger injectors, 2002 Focus Swap

Hey, this is a good thread. Don't let it die (like my car)!
My 95 Contour also has a bad, rough up and down idle and sometimes kills when cold. But since I drive on the highway mostly I have lived with it.
I replaced the IAC (Idle Air Control?) valve on my '89 Ford Tempo to fix a bad idle and it worked, but that only cost $50.
The Contour IAC is $189?

$66.99 at autozone. It's a hell of a project to replace it. Just cleaning it might help, I recommend replacing it though since you don't want to work on it again anytime soon...

Yes, it cost about 2.5 times less than Ford, we can assume it will last about 2.5 times less as well. Autozone parts = junk
