Hi guys, just wanted your input on a quick question. My sister has expressed that she wants to buy an American car next time she buys one, because she wants to support our manufacturing economy. A few people have told her that "American? You kidding me, all the parts are made overseas!" As far as I know, the majority of GM, Chrysler, and Ford parts are made in America (with some exceptions, i.e. Equinox Chinese engine). Am I right in assuming most American cars are made of American made parts? Thanks for the insight.

Every car in the US now must show "US content" on the window sticker at the dealership. So she can look around to find which one has the most Us content in it - although she'll be looking for ever and end up paying through her ass.

There's not one car that has 100% US made parts, and assembly.

Why? Because thew UAW is so freakin' expensive, that it forces car-makers to buy parts from overseas to offeset the high labor costs that the UAW demands for it's workers.

If you were to buy a car that was made entirely with UAW/US made parts and assembled enitrely by the UAW, it'd make something like a Cavalier cost the same as a god damned Cadillac CTS!

If you buy a used car, you contribute only to thr dealer's profit. I see old beaters with "Buy US", like they expect others to buy brand new cars, not them. Why don't they contribute if they are so patriotic?

Also, these same people will go to WalMart or Best Buy and get Chinese made stuff. "Cuz they're the cheapest store"

Tell her to buy a car from the 80's or earlier. Then she can see how "great" American cars are. *laughs*

Saturn is the vehicle with the most American parts made on it. That is a fact I read somewhere, you can dig it up on the internet pretty easily.

a lot of the "foreign" cars have american made parts in them, especially the ones that are assembled over here. the company I work for makes parts that are used in Toyotas, Hondas, Subarus, Nissans and probably a few more.

NAFTA actually made it easier for automakers to move assembly plants to Mexico and Canada. In the end, if you're looking to "buy American", any car manufacturer owned by a US parent company will ultimately benefit from your purchase regardless of how many "foreign" parts are in the vehicle. Buying a Toyota just because it is made in the US is still benefiting a Japanese company in the end.

Where it gets complicated is US companys own major percentages of foreign companys and like wise the other way around. Buying anything that is manufactured in the US regardless of parent company will keep a US employee employeed, ultimately helping the US economy from the bottom up. Ofcourse, with taxes the way they are many companies will eventually out source everything. Bottom line is with this "global economy thing"......YOU CAN'T WIN!

BMW's are assembled in the states, but the majority of parts are Germany (adverage of 80%) and an adverage of 5% American and the other 15% is from a host of onther countries.....So NO!!! BMW is not an American...also, the majority of BMW's are imported....the North Carolina plant only produces about 25%-35% of the BMW's in the UNited States.

The things you learn, while your working for BMW N.A.

I cannot speak for toyota, but BMW is as american as brautworst.

BMW has got a plant in Alabama to assemble the X5 don't they?

Either way, it's silly to find an "American" car. You want an American muscle Camaro/Firebird? You gotta goto Canada to find its assembly plant.

America did this to itself. The UAW has destroyed the American car companies. Can't wait to see Toyota over-take GM for the #1 spot.
