I know I was being cynical.

But for $15K, and it to be fast, cheap to run and a 4-door, I'd probably say an SVT.

I don't think I'd dump that sort of cash into an old Beamer as those suckers cos $$$ to keep running. Hondas are uninspiring in 4-door forms, Toyota has nothing worth looking at, Mazda; maybe a Mazda 3 hatchback, Nissan, a used 2000 Maxima, GM - nothing, all their 4-doors suck turds for styling, so hence why I reverted back to the SVT.

Only other thing I would look at is a GTi Golf

i assume you mean the new impreza 2.5RS, most people dont know it exists, since the vast majority of "new age" imprezas on the road are wrx's.

from my experience, subarus are well built cars. great traction in any condition. the 2.5 n/a motor has great low end grunt and throttle response compared to wrx, but it dies at higher rpms.

for 15 large you should be able to find a used wrx in good shape. when driven with respect, they can last a long time and are quite reliable. mine has 73K+ miles, stock clutch, zero transmission problems, has seen 3.5 years of autocross, a few track days, and a few other events. but then i've also resisted temptation, the powertrain has seen nothing but stock boost its entire life.

Good cars. MTX AWD setup is much simplier than on the auto. And I say simple=lower cost to maintain.

Im going to go look at these again today. Im trying to figure out a good used car to look at too. I have an i30/max already. Its great but I can't get two. I looked at volvo s80 s but the $$$ repair costs and reliability scare me away. Saab 9-5 are pretty good but I haven't heard much about them, probably drive one of those this weekend. WRXs seem to run around 18 around here. Not much below this price.

Volvo 850 Turbo? For some reason, I've seen a bunch of those today.

Yeah, the S80 has been a little hit or miss with the QC. How about a 98-00 V70R? Looks pretty boring, goes like stink.

As far as the 2.5RS goes I think they are good cars, my stepfather has a 00 Outback MTX (same drivetrain) with about 80k on it, no major problems yet. Should be the most reliable out of the cars mentioned.

A couple of you guys are much too tough on the 2.5RS . It's really a pretty good little car . The later ones don't have the same "effect" (for lack of a better word) as the earlier 2.5RS's , as they seem to be just another trim package of the Impreza since the WRX was introduced . The early ones were more like what the WRX's are now , the "hot" version . My brother's '99 2.5RS is a sweet little unit (his is an MTX 2-door) . It's got more than enough grunt & runs out very well up top too . With the CAI & Remus exhaust it sounds really tastey too . It's certainly on par , performance-wise , with a non-SVT Contour , plus has AWD for instant acceleration ! I could certainly see having one . I'd have one over an Outback & whatnot , since you get the 2.5 engine instead of the 2.2 & a bit more performance (don't know about the later ones) . The later ones seem much more washed-out & plain jane than the early ones , but I'm sure still almost as much of a hoot to drive .

There are some pics of his 2.5RS HERE .
