What are the differences between an mpeg, wmv and avi?

i beleive it is just the way the video gets encoded

all of those formats will play with windows media player and are the most common I beleive

mpeg is more compressed than avi... wmv is even more compressed and suffers a bit in quality..

correct me if i am wrong here

WMV is Windows Media Video, I didn't see a web defintin for it.
