What is your opinion on this. Even though we have a fairly large number of radio stations here in NYC Metro Area, they suck!! They play the same 5 songs all day long. Is XM any different?? I've been to other states and cities and I hear songs we never get here in NYC. BTW, is it $9.99/mo or $12.99/mo???

XM is 9.99, AFAIK.
I haven't been able to justify the cost, but if you aren't happy with radio in your area, i suppose it's worth a look. I have 50 CDs of MP3s burned that I will eventually use in my car, but i'm poor so that won't happen any time soon either. Until then, it's AM talk radio and CDs for me.

You would think that after spending all that money to get the equipment to receive XM, they would let you have it for free. IIRC, they once advertised 500 stations, now it's closer to 100... IMHO, I think XM is similar to cable. Yea, they offer 100 stations(channels), but how many are any good? If you are set on getting XM, I would at least wait until the cost of the equipment comes down(I'm sure it will). Hey Dave, are there any companies that are planning a MP3 CD changer? I think RF had the right idea with the card thing, but I would rather put 12 CDs with MP3s on them(about 200 songs each) in a changer and have 2400 songs at my disposal! Wow!

I don't know off hand, but if all of them aren't planning on doing something like that, they are crazy. I've been kind of anxious too see one and bracing for myself for the prices....

My money says Sony or Alpine will be the first ones to do it(given Sony will give up on Minidisc). Too bad I have a Pioneer. I wonder if you would have to have a compatible HU (That would come out at the same time as the changer-MP3 changer ready), or could you use a regular CD changer capable HU? Hmmm..

I just do not drive enough or spend enough time in the car to justify the cost which will come down went the technology get cheaper but what about the home application. the dish network offers music thru their service so maybe if xm offers channels then I will move into my car and live there watching lots of different channels in the car.
does xm or sirrus offer video if not now maybe in the future?
imagine driving while watching the simpsons while motoring thru traffic.

People have a difficult enough time talking on the phone and driving. Put some video in front of them and I don't want to know the outcome. That is why most mobile video units do not play when the car is in motion. It's just to dangerous.

I also think satellite radio is like cable tv. I tried a unit at Best Buy and there was a good amount of variety, but they only had 1 dance/trance station, not enough for me. If you have really wide tastes, then you'll probably like it. Me, I'd end up listening to 5 or so specific stations (not worth $10/month imo).

If you're considering getting XM strictly for the music, I think you'll be somewhat disappointed. Keep in mind that XM isn't just selling you a method of listening to music, but they are selling you a totally new customer experience. Some channels have no commercials. I now longer have to listen to the news when a radio station wants for me to. I can, at any time, select Fox News and catch up on the latest news. If you're really serious, I would suggest checking out the XM Radio website. You can sample a few of their channels online.
