I'm thinking of doing a clean WinXP install on the home desktop and I, uh, "lost" the Office cd. So I'd either need to pirate a[nother] copy or buy it @ ~$200 to keep Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook. My question is what are the popular and inexpensive alternatives to Office and Outlook?

I have a little experience with StarOffice and just downloaded the most recent version. Is it the best alternative to Office? What about an email client? Anything out there that'll sync with a PocketPC?

If I was forced to purchase OfficeXP I'd probably suck it up and buy another machine since I'm adding a HDD and some more memory anyway. This is a lowly 1ghz Athlon with PC133 ram that I'd like to spend about $100 on and get another year of quality use before buying or building another one.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Looks and feels like all the crap Msoft puts out, but they do it a whole lot better and don't treat you like you are a 11 year old non-english speaker with a fetish for paperclips.

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with pirating another copy? And by 'wrong', I mean why wouldn't that work?

I have this in FC3...just like Office XP. I don't think you will have any problem transitioning from MS Office to Office XP.

For a basic word processor Abiword is not bad...

And if you do any photoshopping but can't seem to "find" a cd for that...The Gimp is fairly similar to Photoshop and free.

Tehcnically you can legally make a single copy of office as a backup.
If you really have the original, you should be able to order just the media, which I imagine would set you back between $10.00 and $30.00

Open Office is totally ace! I usually put it pre-installed on all my systems I sell to residential customers. It does, however, lack in WordPerfect compatibility if you need that. Otherwise it's ace!

Also for anybody wanting to make free PDF's check out Cute PDF

Technically, nothing but I'd like to keep things on the up and up.
