I replaced the waterpump on my 99 Contour SE Sport (v6) this last weekend. It was a white plastic one, but showed no trouble signs. I tapped a little and still no cracks or anything, but you never know what condition the internal structure was in. It took me a few hours, but wasn't that awful with the help of my dad. Now I have that piece of mind that I shouldn't have to worry about my new Duropro metal pump. I also need to have 45,000 mile services done on it, but one thing at a time. Anybody else been able to have this peace of mind recently?

peice of mind is good

just so you know the white impeller is the revised one and isn't known to fail, the black one on the other hand ...

btw what is the production date on your car?

I know they changed the impeller material between 98 and 99, plus it would add to my peice of mind that both our 99s have the newer pump

I have a 99 V6 with 106500km on the clock and the waterpump is the original one. My build is 10/08/1998. I wanna know what is the starting date when they change the imepeler.

Nic.

90K miles strong, No worries!

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I am thinking of doing this soon. I have about 57 k miles on my tour. I was going to have the coolant and therm replaced before winter at the dealer. Should I just go and do the pump now as well? Would the dealer have the one with the metal impellor?

thanks!

I don't have the same car here, but as far as WP's go they should last a good 90K+. That is about the time that the pully or barings would fail. But the problem they are talking about is when the inside parts die way before their time. If you have a pump that has been proven to die early replace it on your own terms and not on the highway at 3am in the morning calling AAA. Looks all good here, Keep the old one for a backup.

i changed mine out, after i bought my car at 80k.
it's an 00 csvt, and had the white plastic. i ordered a new one from dealer and was the same white plastic, which i figure lasts at least another 80k.

for those thinking of doing this, i'd say DIY, it's pretty easy other except for the part taking off those clamps on the hoses. and i had plastic bags to catch the coolant from the hoses so didn't make much of a mess.. and wore latex gloves.

anyone still have probs temp getting too high after changing waterpump/thermostat? mine will go almost all the way right close to end of normal range..then i'll put the a/c on to turn on the fan.. only does this when i drive for a while, on local roads. i'd change the ECT sensor, but i don't think that's the problem since my gauge works fine up and down.

Yeah, I figured they wouldn't have the metal one. As long as the one with the white plastic will last me, I am fine with that. Not looking foward to the bill for this, but like everyone says, better now on my own terms than later.

I think mine was produced somewhere around the end of 98. I haven't looked at it in a while. I had heard the white ones are better, but I still didn't want to take chances and get stuck somewhere. I remember a year or 2 ago some guy with a 2000 contour with only 30-40 thousand (somewhere in there I thought) had one fail on him so I decided it must be done. Now I am gonna have the system flushed along with the power steering system. You could probably get the dealer to get that part from napa, but they would charge you more for it. I doubt they would put it in if you went and bought one and handed it to them. Even if you had the white one put in, you should be fine for quite a while.
