Pull the vacuum line to the egr valve and see if the idle smooths out. if it does, the egr vacuum regulator is probably messed up. Also, the egr valve may be stuck partially open. You can check this by feeling the egr pipe after a short idle time (about a minute). Be careful! it may be very hot. I would expect that the dpfe sensor is bad, though.

Hey Greg got a question.
The car (96 Zetec) like most Tours has a rough idle, so what your saying if I let it sit in drive and then pull the vacuum line and it smoothes out the EGR regulator is bad?

P0402 is related to the DPFE sensor, exsessive egr flow at idle, I had this issue last summer and there is a good thread on it if you search for it
but do check the egr valve first, when you apply vacuum and the idle stumbles the valve is fine so it will be the DPFE sensor

HAHA!! I remember that!
I just pulled a lenghth of EGR vac hose off an old Mercury V-8. I can plug it into anything & apply vac as needed. Pick up a couple feet of vac hose from your local auto parts store for $2 or less and use that.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
