So is there a timing chain or timing belt and is it behind the water pump? Sorry for any confusion

On US models of the V6 (Duratec) Contour/Mystique:
- There is a timing chain on the passenger side of the engine. You won't be able to see it without a lot of work; it runs in oil and is therefore well covered.
- There is a small belt on the driver's side of the engine that runs the water pump. You can see it by removing the black plastic cover on the front of the engine. The cover is held on with only a few small bolts. I recommend taking it off and looking around, just so you understand where everything is. This only takes a few minutes. Try it!
- And, of course, there is a large, easily visible serpentine belt on the passenger side of the engine, which runs all accessories except the water pump. This includes: alternator, A/C compressor and power steering pump. The timing chain is just "inside" of the serpentine belt (i.e., toward the center of the engine).

Like everyone including i have said, the timing chain does NOT need to be replaced....it usually lasts well past the actuall life of the motor so long as you do reqular oil changes and check it often that the oil does not run low.
Belts should be changed about every 50,000-70,000 miles depending if there cracked or not.
Now, i will explain again:
there are 2 belts, an acessory belt (passanger side) and a water pump belt (driver side, attaced to front cam)
The timing chain is locted behind the timing cover..the timing cover is the cover the acessory belt sits on...it is completly sealed cause the timing chain, needs oil to funtion properly.
