Well after being away from the boards for nearly 6mos. I'm back, but not w/good news. Yup, My 3L is toast well somewhat. After doing a dry compression test all cylinders but #3 came back at 190, #3 100. After a wet compression test #3 cylinder jumped back up to about 170 which seems to the mechanic indicating a sealing issue with the rings. I've got a misfire/low compression/loud tacking sound coming from the #3. Strangely enough, the day this all happened I was toodling along to work just a couple miles down the road from my house, no problems or noises. I park the car go to grab something, come back out start the car and then all of a sudden there's a loud tacking sound accompanied by a rough idle. It's been down hill ever since, cars been sitting for the last 2mos. Seems my car has been doing more sitting than driving. With the money I've wasted on this car, I regret ever buying this car in the first place. The crazy part is, unlike the 2.5, this 3L has seen mostly the mild side of me. I just had the car towed to my friends today so I can work on it, when the motor comes out I'll let the board know what I find. Any Prognosis?? Thanks, Micah

Any details on the build? Hybrid, straight 3.0? Engine year, rebuild prior to install?

Pull the valve covers and check your lifters like Keyser said, I bet one is not shot.
I offer PnP Heads for all durtec's details at PnPheads.com or jesse@pnpheads.com for details.

I haven't personally inspected the lifters, but the mechanic did and he can't find anything wrong with the lifters at all. I haven't gotten a second analysis but I will when my friend takes a look at it, this coming week.
I feel inclined at this point to just count my losses like all my other project cars and just sell it as is before something else goes wrong!!

If it was a dead lifter it would probably have to be a dead intake lifter, and only the primary intake valve inorder for it to not get any air into the cylinder. That could [censored] up the compression test. Does it do ok once the secondaries open? If so then maybe you are on to something. If not, then it is highly unlikely that there are two bad lifters side by side on the same cylinder.
A wet compression test indicates that the cylinder is pulling in some air though. He could have a screwed piston ring. A low-end knock or bad bearings won't cause bad compression like that.

The price to pay for modding your car.. That makes me nervous being somebody just starting my 3L project. I will have to just try to make sure everything is done correctly and cross my fingers.

I'm betting you spun a bearing. I bought a cougar a while back that had a loud tapping noise and it turned out to be a spun bearing. The bearing went and the piston had enough slack to hit the head when it traveled up. Not a good thing.

I was talking to Micah as well and thought of a lifter as the first suspect culprit. The engine is a hybrid prepped by me as a long block and has around 6K on it now according to Micah. The conditions it started under didn't lead me to a spun bearing guess right off the bat, but it would be an easy check by dropping the pan versus pulling the heads.
