Ok first off. I changed the upper o2 sensors a couple of months ago. This past weekend I took off the TB and cleaned it and the egr passages to clear an insuficiant egr flow code. Now today while driving home I get the 420 and 430 codes. Any suggestions? Oh yeah 98 sport V6 2.5. Maybe I need to change the lower o2 sensors now????

if you didn't get a O2 code chances are they are fine. my mothers contour had a P0420 the other week, and no O2 codes
I graphed the O2 and cat monitor sensor output and then compaired it to my contour and they were the same
it seems that something was just right to throw that code but it hasn't come back
you can take that car to your dealer and you could get the pre-cats replaced under the federal laws if you have under 80k
or you can reset the computer and see when they come back

They will be back unless you have resolved the reason they appeared in the first place.
The P0420 and P0430 codes are very common and have been the source of many previous discussions. Poke around (using the SEARCH tool) for more details.
I am coming to the opinion that some of the cat failures are due to the period of time that the upper O2 sensors were defective. I believe that the enrichened exhaust mixture resulting from the weak upstream sensor has been causing the catalyst to fail prematurely not too long after the upstream O2 sensor is replaced.
Perhaps the recent discussion on the rejuvenation of the cats is related to this.
Steve
PS The lower O2 sensors do NOT cause the P0420 or P0430 codes. They have a separate self-diagostic procedure that the PCM executes prior to running the cat efficiency monitor test.

I have been poking around on the search section. I posted because I have not found a clear answer in my search. But it appears to be that I need new cats.

If you have less than 80,000 miles, it's a warranty item
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I heard it was only 70,000 in California for some reason.
