I wanna paint my steel rims, not the alloy ones, before winter to have them clean. I'm gonna remove the tires from it and sandblast the rims before. I would like to know if i have to use a primer before painting and which kind of paint do i have to use. Aerosol is a good idea? Can i use a clear at the end to have a glossy finish or some kind of paint will do the job? Thanks.

Not that I'm a expert on painting or anything, but here is what I think. If you are going to sand blast, primer is a must for a base coat/clear coat job. You could get a can of Rustolem and go at it with out painting, but it won't have much gloss. You might check on a rust prohibiting primer, that could be worth the extra bucks. Clear coating would help because it would give you the ability to polish them up real nice whenever they need it. What color btw?

I'm going to say yes, but don't sand blast your alloy, thus you don't need primer either.

Does Rustolem is a primer/paint with color? I'll pain them black.

I'm pretty sure its a Primer/Paint in one, but the finish isn't great, unless you want a flat or matte black. My dad and uncle use to buy gallons to paint the dirt track car, basicly cause it would get all beat up every week and they could just touch it up with spray cans........ and it didn't rust.

Completely sand the wheel to roughen the surface so the paint sticks better. Primer is a very good idea, use a couple of coats. Then spray 3-4 light coats of color. Dont cover the wheel completely with one coat, do it a little at a time with light, thin coats. Definately use a clear coat. The prep will make or break the finish, and determine how long it lasts. I used Duplicolor wheel paint from Pep Boys. It matched the stock silver pretty well, but its not a perfect match.

So the best wayto do it is to sandblast it, few coats (2-3) of primer, 3-4 coats of paint. Then clearcoat for the finish. 1-2 coats for the clearcoat?
