My friends mercury mystic (duratec 97 or 98 i think) radiator light comes on when he starts it up and turns off once the car warms up, what gives?
My guess is theres a small leak or something like that and theres not enough fluid but when the car warms up the fluid expands just enough for the light to go off
Is what i just said logical or just plain dumb?

Oh he also said hes pretty sure theres something wrong with his cats, that they might be clogged or something, any way of checking that??

thx

The sensor that reads the level of coolant in the reservoir is a little over-sensitive. Fill the coolant level an inch or so above the MAX line (I fill to the tops of the letters) and the light should stop coming on. If you notice the level dropping start looking for leaks.

There are two easy ways to check the catalytic convertors. Read the BARO pid during a wide open throttle acceleration. If the engine boggs down shortly after opening the throttle and the BARO starts changing rapidly, the convertors may be clogged. Also, on the 6 cylinder, look at the DPFE hoses - they may be blown apart or melted. On the 4 cylinder, take the convertor loose from the manifold (just drop it down a bit) and see if it runs better. It might help if you tell us why your friend thinks his convertors are messed up...

Pretty sure it's short for "Barometric", meaning having to do with pressure.

big mack - yeah, it stands for barometric pressure. it's a pid that youcan read with a scan tool. Normal value is 150-160 Hz.
