I hope to hear a lot of banter over this... I want to know what your top 5 brands of subs, and then your top 5 for amps in order. Just looking for opinions--this ought to help noobs, and I could learn something new. Thanks.

I don't know much about subs and amps, but I am very happy with my 12" eclipse sub. it looks and sounds great too. Jl makes some great subs too. I almost bought a W6...those are great.

ive had mtx, kenwood, sony, pioneer, lightning audio, and infinity. the 10" infinity reference lasted and sounded the best. you can see by the price ranges from the speakers i listed is a low budget. all but the infinitys blew within 2 days. i have a power acoustic 1600 watt amp for 3 years and had the infinitys for 2. the mtx are second on my list but yeah theres better out there. my amp is bad though 2 ohm 1600wt mono.....

I'm probably the most in-between member on the board (guru/n00b) so let me give you my list. Keep in mind that I can only speak from what I've heard, not say-so
Subwoofers: 1: Kicker 2: Memphis 3: Rockford Fosgate 4: Audiobahn 5: Sony
Amplifier (Subwoofer): 1: Rockford Fosgate Punch "Old School" 2: JBL 3: Alpine 4: Power Acoustik 5: Sony
I don't see the point of these lists, because specific setups will sound different for everyone. Box size/type, wiring kits, headunits, and even number of passengers will make anything sound different. But my lists consists of things that I've owned. The Kicker Solobaric L7 was a monster, and even though it was hooked to the JBL, the Rockford Fosgate Punch 500a2 made even my Audiobahn sub beat.
1999 SE White
AVH-P6500DVD
Infinity Reference 6500CS
Pioneer 5x7s
Punch 360a2
Punch 500a2
Adire Tempest in a custom sealed 3.4cuft box
Modded Xbox
Still need Midnight Cloth Headrests... and if somebody has fold down rear seats....

sonys a little too high up on those rankings. sonys suck. jl, and fosgate make great stuff. and on top of that you can have the nicest equipment with a crappy box and itll sound bad. you could have a small system ie 2 low watt 12s in a good box with a small 300-400 watt rms amp and itll sound good. key points in sound systems are focusing on rms, matching a good box with a matched rms on the amp and sub will general give you a strong consistant trouble free system. shoot for above 250 rms amp and sub for a good system. forget about max or peak amps since even bridged they might make a 100 or so watts rms. i had a 85 watt rms amp that supposedly hit 1100 watt peak. you pay for what you get. 1 dollor a rms watt generly

Subs: 1. JL Audio 2. Kicker 3. Cerwin Vega "you know which model " 4. MTX 5. Hmmmm. not sure lol Amps: 1. PPI "old school Art/Pro" 2. Mac 3. U.S. Amps 4. MMats 5. Soundstream "old school" many others could easily go on this amp list: Old school Orion, Zapco etc. It's really tough to make these kind of lists because there are many comparable products but from actual experience, these would be my choices.

Amps:
