What does the temp gauge read? Very likely the the water pump impeller. There's been a lot written about this already - search around a bit.

I don't know if this will help, but last winter I lost heat to my vents and it was a fuse that had blown and needed replacing. Really sucks when it is -10 out.

If you have a Duratec V6, replace the pump and coolant. If your gauge didn't really show overheat, your engine will be fine. The NAPA pump is about 80 bucks, I found an AC Delco metal pump locally for 90, which works well. NAPA just was inconvenient for me. The old pump was in 3 pieces.

Unfortunately, I don't remember which one it was, but it is fairly easy to check for a blown fuse. The fuses are blade fuses, so you just have to open the fuse panel, and pull each fuse (remember the slot you pulled it from). If the metal between the two "blades" is broken, the fuse is broken. If you are unsure, pull a second fuse to verify.
Hope this helps, a fuse is a helluvalot cheaper than most fixes. Sean

Fuses are cheap.. but don't cause an overheating condition..
The tests for waterpump and/or thermostat failure are as follows:
1. Overheating, or rising temp guage. (not always pegged, though most times it is)
2. Check for heat from vents: If none go to WP troubleshooting If heat go to Thermo troubleshooting
3. Check for coolant in tank 4. Check for obvious busted hoses, or clamps. 5. If no hoses are found, Replace the thermo, or WP, depending on condition met in step 2.
Looks to me like you have already seen all the steps for yourself.
Now to buy a WP.
