Hi everyone, I searched but could not locate a solid answer. The power steering fluid used (98 SVT) is Mercon I believe. Can we use Mercon V in there instead or does it have to be Power Steering fluid to use it? I used it in my tranny and boy what a difference. I was hoping for that same effect in my steering.

ok after some searching i found some of the fluids you can use
you can use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF or any other mercon type fluid, mercon v is different so i dont know if it will work.
dont use ATF type F, that is only for the earlier contours, not the later ones.
Valvoline Synpower power steering fluid can also be used.
some have also used AMSOIL Synthetic ATF fluid

I highly recommend Mobil 1 ATF.
Less parastic drag, better thermal protection, and longer service life. The P/S pump spins excessively fast above 4000rpm.
2000 SVT #674
13.47 @ 102 - All Motor!
It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.

Well the reason I was so interested is also because I still have about 2 qts of Mercon V in my garage. I know both the tranny and power steering require Mercon and Mercon V meets this standard and it worked good in my tranny.

For the power steering Mobil 1 ATF is your best choice.
For the tranny DO NOT USE MERCON V !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The manual specifically says do not use it! It's hidden, but it is in there! Use regular old Mercon.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
