SVT (Special Vehicle Team) is a small division within Ford that takes a regular mainstream Ford vehicle, and produces a variant of that vehicle that offers improved performance, comfort, etc. Examples include: SVT Cobra (from the standard Mustang line) SVT Lightning (from the standard F-150 line) SVT Contour (duh, from the std contour line) SVT Focus (also, duh, from the std 3 dr focus line) SVT is also responsible for numerous show/concept vehicles through the 10 years of its existence. check www.svt.ford.com for some more information. or call 1-800-Ford-SVT, they can give you information as well, and also tell you where you can find the nearest SVT dealer.
It's all about balance.

Further, the concept is also to facilitate an interchangeable parts bin for the non-SVT owner who wants to convert his or her car to an SVT (in varying degrees).
For example, you could convert a stock 98+ Contour in to an SVT by swapping out all the individual parts (while stupid and mostly a waste of time) it can be done. This can be done to the Mustang GT, F-150 Flareside, Focus ZX3.
Can't remember if the Cobra R was an SVT or not but I think it was the only SVT that had a different chassis than the stock car it "upped", the SVT Cobra.

Ed All three Cobra R's (93, 95, and 00) were indeed SVT creations. And all three were heavily modified SVT Cobra's...no unique chassis.

Silver Snake: My bad -- I was thinking of the FR500 custom-made by somebody other than the Ford guys. Can't remember who..... It had a stretched chassis and different suspension bits. Thanks for the info. Ed
