Is there an amplifier built-in to the stock headunit on '99 Contours with "premium sound?" In other words, if I disconnect the external amp, can I drive speakers directly with the headunit? I assume I'll need to buy a new wiring harness to do this. Thanks!

hey i had the same question, I recently had a Sony Xplod MP3 deck installed by Best Buy and heard talk in here that the factory amp should be bypassed. I went to best buy yesterday to figure out what they did. They told me not to bypass the amp because either the stereo wouldn't work or it will heat up too much. ?!?!?!?!? I don't know...help?!? confused confused confused confused

You would need an amp as it's an unamplified head unit (hence the external amp).

nyceboi:

They don't know what they're talking about and are just blowing smoke up your a$$.

You need to bypass the factory amp for the best sound.

That's a load of crap! I installed an HU in my brother's car two years ago now. It does not overheat. Hell mine hasn't overheated yet! They are making up excuses because they took a shortcut and got caught. The factory amp will make your Sony deck sound like a$$. If you get the amp bypassed it will sound much better.

As long as the stereo has power it will work. There are kits made to bypass the amp. It will heat up more now since the on board amp is on but that's normal (amps generate heat) You should go back and tear that idiot a new one for lying to you IMO.

They are just cheap and lazy. One extra harness and 5 more minutes of time for far superior sound quality. If they won't bypass it for you, call up Crutchfield.

What's wrong with the Xplod MP3 deck? Is it just the MP3 deck that isn't good, or the Xpolds in general?

from what i've been told, i'm going to have problems with the head unit getting misalighed early and a lots of skipping in teh future. but i got the extended warranty and i can bring it in any time for realignment and cleaning as many times as i want. oh well, it matched my car that's the reason i got it. but damn it the rockwood fosgate one matches 2. oh well, still no worries
