My car has now shut off twice without warning. Yesterday it happened [at night] while my lights and stereo were on. The car simply shut off. My lights went out for a split second but came right back on. I put it in park, turned the key, and it started up without a problem.
Today the same thing happened after coming to a stop.

So this has occured while in drive and at a complete stop. My RPMs never dropped below 800 until it died.

Now for a slight history:
About a month ago I got a CEL after a hard acceleration and pulled the infamous code 0420. I deleted it after researching what it was. Could this have anything to do with this? I don't see how it could, but who knows? (I still need to fix this )

Maybe it's my alternator? Supposedly the belt squeals in the morning when warming up if it's funked (please confirm)... but if that's the case then it's muffled by my TH fixs yell for help. Tomorrow I'll check on that before work.

If it's the UIM, I've cleaned it about 6 months ago with B12. I'd do it again but I don't want to change the oil afterwards (YES it does make it dirty!).

Maybe the PCV Valve?

So now my car is sitting in the driveway with the negative battery terminal disconnected to reset the ECU.

Any ideas?

I actually had the same problem, though not with a Contour. It turned out to be the actual ignition switch in the steering column. I replaced it and never saw the problem recur. Just a thought.

I never would have thought of that...
How could it be the ignition switch? What would cause it to be damaged?
I'm not too sure if that's the problem but I'll definitely keep it in mind. Maybe I'll hit the steering column and see if it gets funked.

The contacts actually had enough wear on them that they just intermittently stopped making contact and when they did, the car just stopped like yours does. It was kinda weird.

In case anybody does a search and finds this topic...
I ended up disconnecting the negative terminal for the night to reset the ECU and this problem hasn't come back.

It's an intermittent electrical connection.. Like the Terminator, it will be back...

So you cursed me. It happened again. No real reason. Just shut off as I was stopped momentarily for the light to turn green. Pretty sure it's my serpentine belt.

I can hear squealing in my radio synchronous in pitch with the RPMs when the car warms up. wtf..?

My car shut off randomly as I stopped and was turning, I was half way out when I couldn't turn my wheel and found out that my car shut off at this time I was at the other lane and a car was comming right at me I started it up and dumped the clutch and got outa the way, a middle finger followed but dammn. This is the second time this has happened to me in 6 months any suggestions?
