When I rev my engine, it will get to a certain point and then just go vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom-vroom and the actual engine in the engine bay will jolt back and forth with the noise. This is happening when I barely have the gas pedal pushed down. Any ideas what is happening? The engine seems to run fine when driving normally.

If it's an automatic (ATX) and you're getting that around 4K RPMs, it is normal.

You're hitting the rev limiter and the computer is keeping you from doing something stupid, like blowing up the torque converter.

I have an automatic, but I have never seen this on any car before. I don't have a tachometer so I don't know how many rpm's I'm doing. The engine barely revs before this happens.

Get your motor mounts checked out. If they have cracked or broken it will definetly cause shaking under load.

Projectsho89 is right on. Rev-limiter while in park or neutral is set very low (4000 rpm). When in drive the computer sets it at the normal limit (maybe 7000 rpm or there abouts- don't know exact hi-end limit)

I agree. I remember testing my IMRC and hitting the limiter. I pulled open the throttle too quickly and I was almost instantly vroom-vrooming. And yes, the engine does bounce back and forth quite a bit when you do this.

If that is what you're experiencing (mostly likely since you're not having any other problems) its a safety feature designed to protect the torque converter from overheating, as projectsho mentioned.
