Ford booklet # - 1W7J-19T200-AA
Revised 05/00
States: CONTOUR , MYSTIQUE
"Replace cam shaft belt every 200,000 km"
Which by my figerin' is about 120,000 miles. BUT the tensioner and various other tensioner components MIGHT NOT last that long. Mine did NOT last. Take a look , that should answer your question.

again this has been talked about before, but yes the tensioners wear and could fail long before the belt

Would it be possible to replace the timing belt and pulleys without without having a shop do it?

Mine has not been replaced that I know of, and if it ever goes I'd replace it myself if it was possible.

yes, search for my timing belt faq, in there are directions from the 95 Ford shop manual for the Contour/mystique

it is possible if you have the right tools and knowledge

ME! OVER HERE!
My 20K Mile belt had to be changed because the previous owner (a dealer) didn't replace any of the 3 pulleys. So...
