Guys,
There are a number of web sites around for “MP3 Juke Boxes”. That's where my head is at.

Most take an old P1 computer and hard drive, and turn it into a music machine. Some people have adapted them to their cars. If there is an interest, bring up www.dogpile.com and search for “MP3 Juke Box”. Some will be do it your self sites, and some will be sell sights.
The glitch for these guys is generating the different DC's required for the boards and floppy drive. I can make the power supply, and acquire the sw. For me it's no problem adapting the project to the car.

The idea of having 200+ hours of music on a hard disk in the car is appealing. Having a small general-purpose mobile computer in the trunk might have its advantages for other projects. GPS stuff and Ham Radio to name a few.

A friend of mine has one of the hand held MP3 players with a built in 20gb hard drive. That and a small FM modulator shows some great promise. They load from your home computer with a high speed LAN connection.

I'm trying to get away from having disks loose in the car. I carry enough junk around, and don't need anything else.

I also have learned to dislike broadcast music that's sprayed at us. Enough ad's, enough crap. Guess I'm getting old and crotchety. 42 inset' old if you're a rock.

Let's kick this around a bit.

Thanks in advance
Jack Crow

Check out the lastest issue of Poptronics (January '02 I think) magazine. There's an article in there on how to build a fairly small MP3 deck that uses a harddrive for storage. The company that designed it is offering a parts kit that includes the PC boards and electronic parts for under $200. I think they used a 30Gb harddrive and stated it will hold something like 350 hours of music.
