I didn't notice it when I was test driving the car, but now that I've had it for a few weeks I noticed that the temp gauge apparently doesnt' work.

It always stays at cold, except for one time when it rose a tad but then it went back down.

The fluids and engine oil are all fine, and I assume is a bad sensor or connection, but how do I fix it?

I'm not sure where to start.

Sounds like a bad gauge or sender.

Water Temperature Indicator Sender Unit
Removal and Installation

Drain engine cooling system.

Disconnect battery ground cable

On 2.5L engine equipped vehicles, remove air cleaner

Disconnect fuel charging wiring from water temperature indicator sender unit located on the water crossover (2.5L engine) or water thermostat housing (2.0L engine).

Remove water temperature indicator sender unit.

To install, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten water temperature indicator sender unit to 7-10 N-m (62-89 lb-in) on 2.0L engines. Tighten water temperature indicator sender unit to 18-24 N-m (13-18 lb-ft) on 2.5L engines.

I've been having the same problem. The car runs fine and I know it can tell when the car is getting hot because it turns on the fans, but the gauge only works sometime and not others. I've already had my cooling fluids flushed and replaced this year. This problem seems to go away when I play around with the engine, so my guess is there is a bad wire someplace from the sender maybe?

Don't know if you have a 2.5 or 2.0L but mine doesn't work either and it's a 2.0...i haven't gotten around to fixing it but mine is caused by a broken connector thats not plugged in to the temp sender. Mine seemed to be very brittle and that could possibly be your problem too. The temp sender on a 4cyl is located on the underside of the thermostat housing which is bolted to the head...should be easy to identify.

My car is a '98 zetec, sorry I forgot to mention that earlier.

I am assuming my problem is a bad connection, because the gauge did rise once, but I'm not sure how to verify whether or not I'm right.

Also, assuming it is a bad connection, I should probably try to trace it down, but I'm not sure where to start.
Any suggestions on how to trace it would be great, thanks!

That's where I would start. Check the plug that connects to the temp sender. For location see quote above. I just fixed mine yesterday and the plug on mine is all busted up but I managed to connect it back in and now it's working again.

Cool thanks! I'll be checking that for sure this week. Hopefully it'll be some thing simple that I can fix without buying new parts. Thanks for the help guys!

See where the top radiator hose attaches to the engine on the drivers side? There is a connector at the top, and one on the bottom left (the one you want), under the radiator hose. You can reach it by sticking your hand between the hose and the heat shield for the ehaust manifold. Its pointing down.
