hey all,

Does anybody know if the IAC is normally closed or open when the engine is not running? And with the key in the on position? I belive mine is faulty, but cannot tell unless I know if its normally open or closed when the engine isnt running.

Anybody know about this or be able to go out to their car, remove the IAC tube from the intake, and blow into it?

And yes, I realize this post may get some funny answers, but I really neeed this info.

Thanks in Advance!

I was just looking at my fathers 95 over the weekend and I beleive the secondaries are open when the car is off. When the car is started they close and then if working correctly they will open at about 4k. this is the only thing that makes sense since they only more when the enhine is started or when they open while driving

IAC closed with no power, reasoning to follow in edit.

Edit: Although no experience myself problems with IAC seem to lead to stalling, so I deduce normally closed is static situation, i.e., power off. Key in run position is different matter however since PCM would presumably be giving it some some signal in preparation for engine start.

i believe horseydug is correct. at WOT the IAC valve should be fully opened. at idle it should be almost closed. and while off, but the key in the ignition it should probably be open waiting for you to start the car. (how far i dont know, though i would assume it would be largely open until the idle comes down when it goes to the almost closed position). why do you think your IAC is bad? what symptoms are you having? if your symptom is a high idle, go to your car and pinch the rubber hose that connects to the IAC while the car is idling high. if your rpms drop down when you do that (almost stalling) then your IAC is sticking open.

Why don't you just block off its air intake to determine how it affects idle operation?

I have a 95 with the vacuum operated secondaries. They are open when the car is off. Closed once it's started. Then open when it hits 3.5K.
