i have a 1996 tour with a zetec and a brand new tranny. speedometer works fine but odometer and trip meter inop, only reason im concerned is i have a warranty on tranny, and i have already had a problem so i was still covered. it quit working after i got it back the second time from the tranny shop. should i take it back or is it my problem?

Definatly their problem. I had problems with a local tranny shop, I took it back and they fixed everything. Well almost everything. I diddn't feel like going back there again because Im starting to believe that stupidity is contagious.

If the speedometer is working, then the vss is also working. the connection between the speedo and the odometer is internal to the instrument cluster - so I don't think the transmission shop could have messed it up. There is a stepper motor in the cluster that is bad about going out - the gear turns on the shaft or one of the phases goes out. I'd ask them about it, but don't expect them to pay for it.

how hard is this to remove or should i give up now

it isn't very hard.

you can go for fixing the odometer by taking apart the instr. cluster. I'd probably buy a whole instr. cluster (about $20-30) with a similar mileage and drop it in. that takes a short phillips head screwdriver and less than 1hr of your sweet time

fixing the odo takes a few more fine tools and some more time and patience while fiddling with the internals, but isn't very hard.
