well i just got a 95 ford contour gl for my 16th bday and i really want to put a system in there because the factory speakers sound reaallly bad. But anyways i went to sears a couple days ago and saw an aiwa cd player on sale for $100. I was about to get it when the guy there said they didnt have a kit for the car. I've heard from people online that i may not need a kit to take out the factory tape player. is it possible to not use a kit?

Definitely not needed. The stereo will come with some sort of metal sleeve that you will mount in the empty slot by bending tabs to hold it in place. Once this is completed, connect the wires and slide the HU into place and push until you hear a click which will tell you it is set into place properly.

Let us know if you need anything else, or any recommendations.

To take it out, you don't. But it's probably a whole lot easier. You can use some nails or a piece of a metal coat hanger bent into a "U" shape. You should see four holes around the face of the headunit, that's where your choice of tool goes.

Having an wiring harness would really make your life easier. It connects between the factory harness and the harness for the headunit, so you don't have to cut and splice the factory wires. At least get one of those, Best Buy or Wal-Mart should carry them.

Check your front speaker grills, make sure you don't have "Premium Sound" written on them. If you do, that'll make installation a little more involved, but not difficult by any means. (I'm not sure if premium sound was an option on the GL or not.)

Thanks Perry! I completely forgot about those points.

This should be an absolute priority. It makes an installation go from a arduous task to a simple plug and play. Completely forgot to mention that in my original post.

The tools to pull the OEM HU are cheap and make life a whole lot easier as Perry said.
