Hi all, just bought a 99 Contour with the Duratec 2.5L V6 and ATX. The car has 34k miles on it, no leaks and seems to be in good condition. Drove fine on test drives, drove fine the first day I owned it, but now has some very strange transmission behavior. Shifts fine most of the time, but sometimes downshifts then upshifts for no apparent reason. This does not occur every time I drive the car, but appears to happening more often. It happens at any speed, throttle setting, etc. I have no check engine light or other warning lights coming on, and the gauges seem to work fine, no erratic readings from speedo, temp gauge, etc. The fluid level is correct and the fluid does not apppear to be burnt or discolored. Any light you can shed on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

i have a 93 taurus that would downshift for no reason... drive along at about 35 mph and all of a sudden it was like someone put it into first gear for a second or two and then drive along fine.. it was the vehicle speed sensor.. the wires to it were damaged when i changed out the motor mounts and jacking up the engine stretched the wires and made the copper inside the plastic/rubber coating break... eventually i had to drive home one day at 5 mph. as it would not shift out of first gear.... a fix on the wires solved the problem.. this might be your problem???????
if so its alot cheaper than trans. problems....

If you search the transaxle section you will find lots of info on this condition. The most likely cause is the range sensor on top of the tranny.

Adding to mercman's suggestion above, I wanted to ask you, "Does your O/D Light flash?".

If not, check your battery cables and the ground that connects the transaxle case to the fender well.

I had this same problem about 8 or so months ago, with no O/D light flashing, and come to find out it was a bad connection on the ground cable for the battery.

If your O/D light is flashing, then I would start looking at that range sensor like mercman suggested.

Welcome aboard!!

It looks like the prob is solved. Dug a little deeper on the search a found a few posts on this prob. It looks like mercman was right on the money, bought a new range sensor from Ford for $28, hasn't acted up since I put it in. While I had everything apart, checked all ground connections, etc. all looked good. Thanks to all who replied. Mike
