Pulled the front three plugs, oiled the cyls put the plugs back in cranked (foot to the floor actually worked better as with the throttle open it'll bring in a lot more air to help blow out any fuel residue) and she eventually fired, smoked for quite a while, took it for a quick ride to make sure it was fully warmed, then let it cool down and changed the oil/filter. Now it runs just as good as she did before the incident with no smoking at all..
Did price out a set of injectors (about $396.00 from the dealer (OUCH! ) Anyone know of a place that sell the right injectors for a better price?
Easiest way to clear a flood, remove all pugs and unplug the coil pack and then crank it over for 2 seconds....the built up fuel will be pushed out.
Glad it started, but your lucky (from my experience) you did not flood it more.

Holding you foot down on the gas while cranking (and its not starting) is a good way to flood your engine....I know cause i had that problem a few times before my motor swap.
So please, do not reconmend that.

Actually on our cars a wide open throttle during cranking does turn off the injectors. It is an intended design feature. It has worked for me many times.
Perhaps if you have a chip this feature may have been removed.
It is unlikely that you need to do anything else unless the problem repeats itself. I have seen this as a one time event on several cars, including makes other than Ford.

It was my understanding that full throttle would cause more flooding but quarter to half would cause enough air to flow in with out flooding the cylinders even more.
I tried many times full throttle when my old 2.5 liter flooded and it did not work....And i have no chip...it acutally flooded 1 more cyliner than the orginal 2 (faulty injectors by the way was my cause).

actually yes. BAT

Replacement Fuel Injectors
Depending on conditions, fuel injectors start to show some
diminished performance after 50,000 miles of use. It would
be nice to replace them with the other items that are generally
serviced at that mileage (plugs, ignition wires, fuel filter).
Only real problem to that thinking is cost. From Ford at
$50.00 each, replacing all 6 can become expensive. We
can help by offering brand new injectors at a sensible price,
allowing most owners replace worn injectors without racking
up a serious bill. These genuine Motorcraft 17lb (beige color)
EV6 type injectors fit all 1998 and newer (non SVT) 2.5L V6
engines.
Fuel Injector 2.5L V6 17lb K7G $19.00ea
"all 1998 and newer (non SVT)" is an overstatement. iirc, 2000 uses different injectors. but you should be ok

Before you rush off to by injectors, check the fuel pressure regulator with a vacuum pump. Sometimes the diagram fails and fuel is sucked directly into the engine via the vacuum line. I have seen this a lot on FI cars.

have you fixed your ford lately?

Lupe, its just the opposite: The Ford ECM has a 'Clear Flood Mode' (i.e, it shuts down the fuel injectors) when it sees the engine at cranking speed and the TPS signal at the maximum.
From the Contour Owner GUide: a.) Press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there. b.) Turn the key to the start position. c.) Release key when the engine starts. d.) Release the accelerator pedal gradually as the engine speeds up.
