sounds like it could be a VSS, is there a problem with the fuel guage also?

the sensor is on the side of the trans on the back side near the firewall, under the intake

no cable the speedo is electronic

If it up shifts real hard through the gears it is probably the VSS. It is pretty easy to change. It is on the bottom of transmission next to fire wall.

He has an MTX - the shifting won't be any different whether the VSS works or not. And it's on the TOP of the trans next to the firewall on a V6 MTX.

Anyway, my VSS broke on my 98 V6 MTX last year. Although removing the unit itself wasn't too hard, getting the broken piece of shaft out that was stuck down in the trans was a PITA. I ended up taking it to a local shop where the guy spent several hours and took some of the trans apart to get that piece of shaft out.

I've since heard others who have gotten good results with things like Super Glue (a SMALL amount) and something such as a toothpick to extract it.
