I've had a vibrating noise in my 95 contour with a zetec motor and auto xmsn ever since i got it. (used with 85k). I figured it was a bad/weak motor mount and the motor or exhaust was sitting on the frame so yesterday I had it apart replacing the cooling fan and thought this would be a good time to check/change the motor mounts. On inspection I discovered that the end of the transmission was sitting on the subframe on the drivers side. So I replaced the motor mounts on the left side and on the front and it made NO difference. Tranny still sitting on top of the subframe. BTW, the old mounts looked fine but I replaced them anyway. The subframe doesn't appear to be bent up or damaged and the alignment is dead on. Any ideas ???
TIA

hmmmmmmm....seems like it has to be the motor mounts. I had that problem with my mystique, and replacing the mounts took care of the problem. I replaced all four, but the one on the driver's side fender had the most effect. What about your other two mounts? I don't know of anything else that could be causing it.

the other two look fine. if the front end geometry wasn't so good i'd suspect a bent subframe or body. i'm wondering if there are shims or adjustments to the motor mounts themselves that may be off ????

same thing happened to me - it was caught by my mechanic during inspection. He replaced the mount and it fixed it. Strange that it didn't work for you. He didn't replace all 4 mounts either.

there are four mounts
I changed three and when in drive stopped at a light the vibrations have been reduced greatly
engine MOUNT, Contour, Mystique, Right - 2.5L 95-97 $188.29 $150.63 (did not change)
engine MOUNT, Contour, Mystique, Left (Front), Auto Trans - 2.5L 95-97 $071.38 $057.10 ... 19.99 F5RZ-6038-D mount list price $74.95 your price $56.21 in stock (changed old mount had minor rubber cracks)
tranny MOUNT, Contour, Mystique, Left (Rear), To Crossmember, Auto Trans - 2.5L 95-97 $092.87 $074.30 ... 24.99 Trans Mount 95-01 AUTO K433TA $105.30 ( from bat this one causes the tranny to hit the subframe causing vibration felt thru brake pedal when stopped at light with car in drive; rubber was in worst condition; major vibration reduction when replaced)
tranny MOUNT, Contour, Mystique, Left (Rear), To Fender Apron, Auto Trans - 2.5L 95-00 $111.59 $089.27 ... 69.99 F5RZ-6068-E mount list price $97.52 your price $73.14 in stock (this one was under the car hardest to replace lots of vibration reduction when replaced and rubber was weak and torn)
lastly rememeber that the engine and tranny do move under all conditions and the mounts prevents touching of other components and so an alignment must be performed to make sure that the mounts are in the correct position to reflect or absorb these movements.

I don't remember any shims, but there are adjustments for aligning the mounts. The front and rear mounts (roll resistors) could be adjusted to absorb more of the load of the engine weight, but I don't think that would be recommended.

i noticed that when i replaced the front mount that the hole in the rubber "bisquit" that the long bolt goes through was a LOT bigger than the bolt diameter. both the old mount and the new one had this big hole. is there supposed to be a spacer in there or something ?

No, there's no spacer. I wondered the same thing when I first saw that. They are designed that way, but I have no idea why.
