I have had 2 V6 contours with manuals which work great. One currently has over 180K miles on it. I am looking for any other car for the family and one option is a 1998 V6 with Auto Trans. I am always worried about Ford auto trans. Some work good, some not so good. How are they lasting in the Contour? I did look in archives.

It depends on two factors how well was it taken care of, and was it beaten on a daily basis.
If it was flushed every 30k and driven by someone who isnt likely to abuse a car, then I would say a really long time.
If it was never flushed and was driven by some teenager who though the Contour was a race car, and took off like the start of the Indy 500 from a red light most of the time then I would say not very long at all.
I know we have one member who trans has 135k ( at the time so more now) on it he said before, still the original, but he also did the drain and fill every 15k I believe it was.

You should start saving up for a new tranny then, because with that kind of power it is a ticking time bomb.

If you're worried, buy the car and install a transmission cooler on it for $60 - $100. If in doubt, it will make the transmission last longer whether or not the transmission itself is going to crap out.
Be sure to flush the hell out of it too.

PM me to tell me of a welder that can craft me a modified Y pipe in the Los Angeles area! OR I may be willing to buy a 3 flange modified Y.

Why would you even consider buying a used tour with an ATX? The problems with the CD4E are well documented, and despite opinions that proper maintence can avoid failures you will have to rebuild it eventually. The flaws are built in, and while good maintence and driving habits can prolong the CD4Es life, sticky and worn valves will cause burnt clutches, broken drums, and fried torque converters.
If you want a tour, buy a manual.

I have a '99 V6 ATX with right around 100K miles. I bought the car new and have changed the ATF regularly starting at around 50K miles. No cooler though. I'm not particularly easy on the car but I don't beat it either. The tranny is starting to go and I'm guessing it will be in the shop for a rebuild before the next 1000 miles get added to the odometer. From the threads I've been reading in the forum, 100,000 miles is about the average life expectancy.
But I have to say that the car runs, rides and handles like the day I drove it home from the dealer. Normally I wouldn't make an expensive repair investment in a car with 100K miles on it but I'm seriously considering it given how well the rest of the car has held up.
Good luck with your car search. chenz

Thanks for the input. I think I'll stay away from an ATX which means no Contour as the car has to have ATX from my daughter driving in bumper to bumper traffic here in NJ.
