I got a p420 & p430 code on the odbII. does this mean i have to change the catilic converter. And is there more than one.

There are two precats.

Please do a search on those codes, there is an abundance of posts concerning them and details you need to know.

Yes, these are bad precat codes.....4 choices, repace each precat( prices i have come to find out are about 900.00 $ Each USD)

Repace with MSDS headders about $600.00 for the set plus installation which is about 8 hours.


Gutt the pre-cats which is free, there is a how-to on the Main Contour.org page. Just remember to use the Mil elimnators to prevent you from getting the codes again.


Or you can replace the o2 sensors in hopes that it was a faulty reading and its just the sensor that are bad.

If the car is newer than 7 years or 70,000 miles, (California only) Ford will replace the pre-cats for free. It is 8 yrs/80k in the rest of the US.

A few people have done the UIM/LIM cleaning and have said this may get rid of a P420.
You might want to do it. It doesn't cost much just your time.
