I have a 1998 Contour SE w/2.5L V6 Engine with approx. 110,000 miles on it. The problem I am having is while i am driving my temp gauge goes all the way into the red. When I got home i checked the coolant level and it was fine. i also checked under the car for leaks but nothing was coming out. Thinking it was the thermostat I replaced it, but the problem still occurs. my low coolant light does come on when i start the car, but goes away after about 2-3 minutes, and cool air comes out when my heater is on even when the temp guage is above normal. Could the problem be the water pump? Thanks for any help.

check your radiator hoses. i would say you have no leaks if the coolant is fine but the hoses might have a clog. this happened on my mustang but before i could react a hose burst. if the coolant is flowing fine make sure your fan is cutting on.

For the coolant light, fill the resevoir tank just above the max mark
and you'll never get a coolant low light again.

No heat out of the heater is the number 1 diagnosis for water pump failure.
Don't drive the car until the water pump is fixed!

Don't drive the car. Your waterpump is gone. If you have no heat coming out of the vents even after warmed up that's the first sign of a bad (broken) waterpump.

Do not drive till it's fixed or you'll need more than a new pump!

just the inlet and outlet pipes from the radiator usually get clogged. let it cool totally down. the fluid in resevoir should read cold. start and leave, coolant should rise. if coolant does not change replace water pump impellar. or do the heat check. i say do both.

The water pump impeller has failed. Quit screwing around and get it replaced. Make sure you get all the pieces of the broken impeller out of the system.

As already said, DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR! Engines are expensive.

DIY

Buy new pump & gasket and belt

Remove plastic front engine cover

Loosen tensioner on waterpump belt & remove belt. (Push tensioner down to loosen slack on belt. Then belt just pops off)

Remove battery

Remove bolts holding waterpump to block (remember which ones are the short ones) A good socket extension helps here.

Pry waterump apart. The part you bought will be the outer piece. The inner piece is just a case part. Have bucket under this section as coolant will come out,not a lot but enough to make a mess

Remove any impeller pieces you can with your fingers

Reverse to put new impeller back on. Add a little coolant to overflow to make up lost amount and then go get the system flushed to remove any smaller pieces of impeller which may escaped your fingers

Very easy to DIY.
