Never disconnect the battery when the engine is running to test the alternator! That might have worked fine on your dads 67 chevy but it can blow the entire electrical system on you countor. An unregulated alternator can easily produce over 60 volts. You pull out the battery (the only thing holding it back) it's goodbye PCM and the works.
Basic testing of the battery and alt is simple. Go to radio shack and buy a cheap digital voltmeter. With the car off, measure the battery voltage. If it is under 12 volts replace the battery. If it is 12 or more start the car and measure the voltage across the battery, it should go up to about 14.4 volts and then drop to about 13.4. If it does, then the alt/reg is good.

With the car off, the voltmeter shows 12.17 volts, but without a jump, I cant start the car....it doesnt work even when it reads 12.17 volts....

Jeez man... your battery may be good when sitting still but when you try to crank it, place it under load, many dead batteries will drop their voltage like a chevy drops engines......
whatever... some batteries will appear to be good but will actually be dead. Try this.. get a load tester. Hook it up and test the voltage. Now place the battery under the load feature and see if the volts drop. If it does then replace the battery (or try charging it first). Once it is charged then crank the tour.
Now with the tour running, place the voltmeter on the battery. If the battery is dropping in volts then it's not getting charged. If the volts is 13.5-14.5 then your system should be charging and the problem is elsewhere.

I got no idea what you want me to do, lol, right now the battery is readon 12.17V, I cant start he car, it will start if I hook up a jumper cable, but as soon as I disconnect, the battery V goes down....Isnt it obvious that my alternator is dead, or is there still a possibility its only the battery?
(I got to the alternator about 30 mins after I shut the car off, and the alternator was still hot, dont know if that means anything)
