Could not post in the dealer rape thread for some reason....

I have a 2001 Saturn L200 that I needed parts for. I was replacingthe balance chain and timing chain. I was finally able to find a kit for the balance chain and a kit for the timing chain. Kit included guies, tensioner, oiler, etc.

Timing chain kit form dealer was 169 and 159 for balance kit.

For autopartsgiant.com price was 130 and 90 respectively. Here I had choice.... I still needed to purchase crank bolt, 2 cam gear bolts, valvce cover gasket and timing cover gasket. I could not find these anywhere else so I had to go to the dealer. They only sold at list and were firm. For these few itms I spent 110 dollars!!!

I am left with bad feelings toward Saturn about this. Here in texas new auto car dealers tried to get a law passed that only dealers could work on their cars.... Of course it failed but I have to wonder about the legislatures that introduced this bill....won't be voting for them again....

I guess dealer's are used to raping you when you come in to purchase a car....why not do it on parts too........

In texas carrying a gun is legal. I sugest next time walk in wearing your authorized hand gun and ask them what kind of a discount they could offer!!!

Every business you can think of has full time lobbyists who push state and federal legislators to pass laws favorable to that business. Big business is the primary source of campaign contributions to political candidates, and it wants political favors in return for those contributions. Just to take one example: the pharmaceutical industry pays tens of millions of dollars a year in campaign contributions and lobbying fees to ensure that Americans pay the highest drug prices in the world.

Car dealers are no exception. They have a local monopoly on new car sales (and on some replacement parts). But that's not enough for them. Now they want a monopoly on repair and service on used cars too?

Isn't it funny: those Texas car dealers are almost certainly Republicans. They probably howl all day long about how the government is too big and intrusive, and how big-government liberals are trying to overregulate everything. But at the same time, they want the government to step in with new laws that distort the market in their favor. Interesting how they are suddenly in FAVOR of new laws and more government regulation, so long as it makes them richer.

Thank God the dealers in Texas were not successful in passing that law. I guess some Republican power-grabs are so blatant that they can't get away with it, even in Bush country.

Last time I checked it seemed like "greed" tended to cross all political and geographical boundaries. I must have left my "rose colored glasses" in California last time I hurried home.

Yeah, why we shop around is important!

I saved about $200 Cdn for 3 dinky belt pulleys going to Bill J as opposed to my local Dealer...who BTW makes me pay for shipping on "special orders"
