I have a 98 (E0) SVT with 56k miles that is totally stock. My mechanic told me last week my brakes are getting near the point of needing service. It was a surprise to me when he stated, and showed me, the rear discs have more wear and were rougher than the fronts. Has anyone experienced this situation?

At the same time I have the brakes done I was thinking of having stainless braided brake lines installed. Anyone have a recommended source and an estimated price? Thanks for the help

Regarding your rear brake pads I've not seen any wear quicker than the fronts under normal conditions. Usually, especially on FWD, they get very little wear.

You mentioned that it's a 56k stock SVT but don't say if you put those 56k on or someone else. It's possible if it were someone else that they had a habbit of driving around with the parking brake on slightly on a regular basis. If this were the case and they were driving for long periods of time you'd likely see signs of overheating, but if they were doing mostly short runs with the car it might not overheat things. Typically, if you're getting accelerated wear on one rear pad it's a sticking claiper, put if both are equally worn and significantly so at 56k I'd look at wheither the E-Brake cable is sticking, etc.

Regarding SS lines, go to the home page of this site and look at the various vendors links such as BAT, CTA Motorsport, SP Motorsport, etc.

Regards, Alan

There was sometimes a problem with the park brake cables sticking, but it was usually on 95 to 97 models and the cables were imporved before 98. It is still worth checking.

I have ocassionally seen rear disc brakes wear faster than the fronts. I don't know all of the possible causes for it in someones driving habits. There is one bad habit that I do know will wear rear brakes faster and that is even the slightest proclivity to riding the brakes can cause rear disc brakes to wear faster.

My wifes 99 mystique was how you described the rears. She also isn't one to ride the brakes MTX car. There never seemed to be any drag when I drove it either. I talked with a mechanic and he said he has seen a few cars with rear discs that they wore out before the fronts. After full replacement of pads and rotors I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary on the rears. I just did my SVTs brakes and they were in much better shape but most of there life was highway.
