Hey, I'm relatively new here and would like some suggestions about my wife's Contour. It is a '95 with 180,000 miles. It lost power and was running really rough one day. I pulled the codes and got a 181 KOEO, and a 326 KOER. I had a really hard time starting the car for the test, so I checked the plugs. one was improperly gapped and carbon fouled, (not my work;we had the head gasket, water pump, timing belt, etc. replaced by a shop). I regapped them all and cleaned the one that was bad. The car cranked easily and drove well on the test drive. The next day, my wife tells me that it is running rough again. It is an intermittent problem, but the car sort of "bucks" every now and them. It is especially bad when going uphill, and when starting out in first. I looked back to the codes, and got several different definitions fro them depending on where I searched. Frustrated, I took it to the Pep Boys chain. Well, all on this board are probably familiar with the noisy cam followers on these cars. Pep Boys heard that noise and thought it was a warped cam. If it was a warped cam, wouldn't the car run poorly all of the time? Based on all of this information, where should I start?

Something I should have said in my first post was that I know the definitions, but I have found more than one for each code. 181 Right side still lean, at richest adaptive limit, during part throttle. (From fordfuelinjection.com)
181 Fuel system mixture too rich-check EGR valve(From the Haynes manual)
181 HEGO sensor-voltage signal not switching: Indicates "lean" during part throttle engine operation(from the Actron manual for my scanner)
336 EVP or DPFE circuit voltage above maximum voltage with zero EVR duty cycle. (From fordfuelinjection.com)
336 PFE sensor signal is high - ">PFE. (From troublecodes.net)
336 Exhaust gas pressure too high. (From the Haynes manual)
336 PFE sensor or EGR pressure Transducer - signal voltage higher than expected (exhaust pressure high). (from the Actron manual for my scanner) There all pretty much the same, but at the same time a little different. Especially the 181 code, (i'm guessing that I shouldn't trust the Haynes manual!). Is code 336 saying that the sensor is bad, or that the exhaust backpressue is so high it can't read it? I'm going to search the board on how to check the DPFE.

OK, scratch the code 336. I pulled that code before I checked the plugs. I retested the computer, and I am only pulling the code 181 from the continuous memory test. My motor is running lean then. So, what do you think? Am I getting unmetered air from a leak somewhere between the MAF sensor and the engine? Or what else could it be? Edit: It only happens sometimes and under load. The car idles fine.

Should the 326 code in your first post above read 336?

Just as a hint. Under the upper intake manifold on the throttle body side, there is a vacuum diagphram that has a rod on it. This controls the secondaries. make note of the rod/cam position when engine is off. start engine and see if rod and cam move. When car is started vacuum is pulled to close the secondaries. If the rod or cam does not move you may have a deffective irmc valve or solenoid......

@ horseydug - Yes, that should have read 336! Sorry for the error. I really don't know too much about these cars, but I thought that the '95's didn't have secondaries. It doesn't say Zetec anywhere on the motor. Feel free to educate me though!
