I have recently come into a little bit of money and now I want to do some mechanical work on my car. I am looking to get a tune up and a coolant flush. My Ford dealership quoted me a price of $300 for both jobs. Is this a good price? Also, what other maintenance work would you suggest to prevent future problems. I have a '98 SE with the 2.5 V6

Never go to the dealership for maintenance items. Find a local shop or two to do your work.

What are they including in the "tune up"? That could be a very very good price, or not, depending on what they are doing.

Dont go to a dealer for anything but recalls. Ford charges like $65 for a fuel filter, you can buy one for $15 and do it yourself with a flathead screwdriver.

Seriously avoid the dealer your car will never be the same after leaving there.

I had my heater switch replaced, now the black thing around the heater control knobs leans off cause they forgot to clip it into place. I used to have duct tape but it looked ghetto.

I'm leaning towards "not."

First of all, how many miles do you have?

For starters, everyone reccomends to change the water pump...there's a how-to off of the main site. Do coolant change at same time.

Then there's stuff like plugs and wires, which is pretty straightforward, the right bank is a little tough, but even with my fat hands i was able to squeeze in there with the right extensions. Autolite double plats seem to be the best bet, i guess, for plugs. For wires, well, i'm not too sure.

Then stuff like air filter is simple. Fuel filter, although i've never done one, seems to be not bad.

PCV valve, is in a tough spot, but if you move the accordian tube and some other crap out of the way, it shouldn't be too bad.

Then i guess for good measure you could clean some sensors.

Then there's trans maintanence stuff which you'd have to search for...

There's more that i'm forgettting, its late....

Personally i would do it at home and save some $$$.
