Went to the stealership today. I needed another key. They said $90 bucks to cut a key and go program the car for the key. I passed of course, but is this true or did this guy just not want to do it? I had always heard that it would be around 35 bucks.

This How-to only applies to the first generation PATS.

yup......more info needed. i assume since you went to a stealership that your key has the little chip in it. if that is in fact the case then your only option is to go to a stealership. no way around it. but do try calling different ones, maybe you'll find one with a better price. if you want a cheap no thought required way to find out if you have the chip have a copy of your key made and try to start the vehicle. if starts and stays that way then there you go. if it won't start or won't stay started then you have a chip. provided there are no other problems with your car.

i just programmed 2 keys for my tour but you have to have 2 working keys for the 2000 model as well as other models. it's a very simple process to program keys!

The FAQ will apply, provided you have one PATS key currently programmed for your car. Keys available on Ebay for about 10 bucks + s/h, see here: Contour PATS Key

horsey- that FAQ takes me to threads having to do with O2 sensors and catalytic converters. nice to know but not the key programming instructions i was hoping for. could you post up the thread as i have not been successful researching the archives or the FAQ's for the answer (perhaps i am asking the wrong question!?) thanks in advance for all us new folks with only one key! lakeside....
