I think we'll find out in the next week or so why his resignation announcement had to be yesterday. He's about to be hit by some massive scandals. He certainly is not resigning because he is gay, or even because he had an affair. If he is resigning because he's gay, then that's a deep insult to the gay community. If he's resigning because he had an affair, then that's a deep insult to Bill Clinton, Gary Condit, and John Kerry.
I think the question here is "Why is he staying?" as opposed to "Why is he waiting?".

Well... I personally think the gay part is irrelevant to the real issues.
1) He cheated on his wife. It doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman, cheating is cheating.
2) He used his influence to get someone unqualified a critically important job. I don't care if it is his child, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, or a person off the street he felt sorry for, that's wrong.
Of course, I can see the temptation... the Isreali boy is cute.

Who did John Kerry have an affair with ? You wouldn't be rehashing some drudgereport flimsy now, would you ? because I know you neocon's have nothing but the utmost repsect for the truth.
Oh yeah, John McCain had many affairs too in his time and he hasn't denied it. Interesting that the only people you mention above are Democrats. How come ?

Was it really a big deal? People have affairs all the time. Hell, Bill had more than that one affair, and I'm sure other presidents have had affairs and not got caught. I'm sure that other presidents have had other coverups which would be more likely to lead to blackmail. And I'm pretty sure that there have been things or mistakes that Clinton make during normal business that would also make him a target for blackmail.

Well, how do you know he didn't like some sort of kinky sex with his wife, and that his wife wasn't blackmailing him? What makes his gay lover any more of a blackmailer than his wife or his ex-wife?

Sure, by doing every day what a president has to do. I'm sure if Monica had tried to blackmail him he would have either gotten the FBI or Secret Service or whomever to eliminate her or persuade her to do otherwise. Of course, he could also have resigned, much like the governor.

The whole thing is very probably much dirtier than it seems now.
After Golan Ciphel - the Israeli dude who got the high security job without even having a green card - quit his chief of anti-terrorist task position, Jim the Governor found Golan another job - with McGreevey's fundraising buddy Kushner. This Kushner guy is a billionaire real-estate tycoon who own lotsa property in the state including several apartment developments in my township. Kushner is under federal investigation and was indicted for a big asse multiple million dolla scam. Now, one of the key witnesses in his case is Kushner's brother-in-law. What Kushner does to eliminate his relative's potentiallly devastating testimony? He hired a NYC hooker (tried to find a hooker thru his friends but ended up contacting her directly) and set up a trap for his brother-in-law, ya know, broken car, "Will ya give me a ride, mista," so this brother-in-law ended up having sex with this hooker in some motel while Kushner videotaping the whole thing. The brother-in-law eventually went to the DA office - seemingly he didn't want to take all the blackmailing - and Kushner was charged with numerous counts of promoting prostitution, obstruction of justice etc.
Now, how unreAlistic would be to assume that the entire love affair was set up by the same billionaire con-artist? Very convenient way to hold the Governor at bay. Please mind you that McGreevey never publickly denounced Kushner, never condemned his actions - even after the whole hooker story got wide coverage in the media.

Keep in mind that even though he's a democrat that has done a lot of f*cked up things, that doesn't mean all democrats are. That's like saying all catholic priests molest little boys, when in reality, only like 70-80 percent of them do.

I'm really not feeling right about the whole thing.
1. Some guys hitting him up for money because of harassment & may have threatened to blow the wistle...
2. He outs himself, goes public...
3. He resigns... Why?
The damage is done if that were all there is to it. He could have ridden it out for a while to see what the backlash was going to be like then announced resignation later if it got to hot for him/his family. Seems like there's something else going on here.... 
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
